At least 13 people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
